It is clear petrol and diesel will not be around forever, therefore car manufacturers are seeking new fuel alternatives. This is nothing new but there still seems to be no decisive way forward. Electricity is all the craze at the moment but I’m not convinced this is the sure bet, I’m much more interested in the hydrogen variety. Step forward Honda.
Finding Clarity
Now even hydrogen isn’t exactly a new concept, even a small brand called Riversimple in Wales has been able to develop a car that runs on hydrogen. Not that I’m taking anything away from Riversimple of course. Let’s focus on Honda though and its Clarity Fuel Cell, which has recently been deemed to give a range of 366 miles by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This means it’s able to better the 315 miles offered by the all electric Tesla and is able to offer 68 mpg.
What’s more, Honda’s hydrogen Clarity Fuel Cell car is the first car of its type to be able to fit the entire drivetrain under the bonnet. Not surprising really when I suppose the amount of innovation Honda has provided throughout the years. However, there are a few problems. Firstly, this car will not be making its way over to Blighty, instead it will be sold in the US only – California to be exact. It doesn’t get much better there as anyone who does happen to buy one will have a choice of just 12 filling stations.
Despite this extremely limited start, could hydrogen be the future of modern motoring?
